Hawkwood

Similar to the Shrine Handmaid, Hawkwood is a character we meet at the game’s outset in Firelink Shrine. Like the player, Hawkwood is an Unkindled. Once summoned by the Fire, he was also tested by Iudex Gundyr before entering the shrine. Over time, however, he lost all hope of succeeding in his quest. This feeling pervades much of his dialogue: “We Unkindled are worthless. Can’t even die right. Gives me conniptions.” These are almost the first words he speaks in the game. “We’re not fit to lick their boots,” he continues, referring to the Lords of Cinder. Later, he adds the following about Aldrich: “Do we have a sodding chance?” We also hear him sigh, “What a sham.” Hawkwood excellently fills the role of the “Crestfallen Warrior,” found in every episode since Demon’s Souls.

Unlike his antecedents, this new demoralized character has a bit of a backstory. To start, he has a name; up until now, Crestfallen Saulden of Dark Souls II was the only of his kind to be named. It turns out that Hawkwood was once one of the Undeads of Farron’s Legion. Called a “deserter,”90 he prefers terms like “flying the coop” to refer to his departure from Farron’s Legion. Due to his status as an Unkindled and the quest he was assigned, Hawkwood has many details on the Lords of Cinder, and he divulges some of them. We’ve seen what he tells of Aldrich, but he also supplies information about the Abyss Watchers. He teaches us how to complete the three tasks to access the Wolf’s Blood in Farron Keep. Behind his world-weary airs, Hawkwood proves a very handy guide. He’s also capable of great empathy: “I pity the sorry souls,” he says, remembering the Undeads from Farron’s Legion. He repeats himself as he communes beside a large tomb outside Firelink: “The poor wretched souls... Be they lord or legend, the curse shows no mercy. What a sham.” He eventually thanks us after our fight against the Abyss Watchers: “I pity the sorry souls. Is that really lordship’s last reward? Ah, I failed to thank you. For helping them find their resting place...” In fact, these are his final words before he leaves Firelink Shrine. Hawkwood can also be generous, providing useful items for players. He leaves behind his precious shield, either to Blacksmith Andre or next to the tomb where he liked to sit.

Later on in the adventure, he leaves another object for Andre: a swordgrass. Swordgrass once “quietly identified members of the Undead Legion,” symbolizing their “gratitude toward their guardians,” according to the description of Wolf’s Blood Swordgrass.91 An additional message, addressed to the player, is written on the one that belonged to Hawkwood: “Come to the mausoleum in Farron. Only one can take the path of ancient dragons.”

If we follow the instructions and go to this location, we must duel with Hawkwood. In reality, each fighter has a piece of the Twinkling Dragon Stone: players have the torso 92 and Hawkwood has the head. When either is defeated (even the player), the other will have the chance to become a small dragon.
